A new study confirms that sleeping more is very helpful when looking to lose weight

Insufficient or poor-quality rest has been linked to increased hunger, decreased satiety, and other changes that lead to weight gain. In this way a recent study confirms that sleeping more can be very helpful to lose weight.

The more hours of sleep, the lower energy intake

Research published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine evaluated 80 healthy adults who slept an average of 6.5 hours each night. They were randomly separated into an intervention group, who received an individualized session on sleep hygiene with the goal of extending rest hours to 8.5, or, they were assigned to a control group.

The hours of rest were measured by actigraphy, that is, activity was monitored during sleep, while the caloric expenditure was evaluated with the doubly labeled water method. All participants were asked not to modify their daily routine, nor were diets or exercises prescribed.

After two weeks, the intervention group achieved extended their sleep by an average of 1.2 hours and reduced their energy intake at an average of 270 calories daily.

No significant changes were observed in energy expenditure as well as in other aspects of daily routine, which means that sleeping more hours can favor a negative energy balance or caloric deficit and thus, be very useful for losing weight.

The mechanisms by which getting more sleep each night can lead to lower calorie intake every day there are many. These include lower stress levels, increased satiety signals, and lower levels of hormones that stimulate appetite.

This study confirms that not only sleeping poorly can lead to weight gain, but also that sleeping more and better can be very useful and key when we seek to lose weight.
