The great Mexican artist Jan Bazaldúa recreated a more famous Spider-Man cover, which stars Mary Jane Watson.
2009’s The Amazing Spider-Man #601 featured a cover by artist J. Scott Campbell that became an instant classic for Marvel Comics. In this one, we see Mary Jane Watson watching Spider-Man spring into action.
And although it is an infinitely reproduced and multi-referenced illustration by cosplayers and Marvel fans, over time the image has been involved in controversy. Among the topics of discussion are the overly sexualized way in which Mary Jane is portrayed, and her exaggeratedly thin waist.
For 2019’s Marvel Comics #1000, his cover was parodied by the same artist in one of the tome’s interior stories. In this narration, we see Mary Jane with the same clothes, but much more casual, with the referred cover in one hand, eating some chips and commenting: “You don’t really believe that I feel like that… do you?”.
Recently, Marvel Comics has revealed a series of variant covers in relation to the upcoming Secret Invasion miniseries. The variant cover for The Amazing Spider-Man #4 is by Mexican artist Jan Bazaldúa, who envisioned a clear reference to Campbell’s original cover. In this new version, we see Mary Jane reveal that she is actually a Skrull, which would explain the complicated posture that she adopted.
