What is it about?
Asteroid City receives its name from its location, a fictional city in the middle of the American desert, located on Route 6, Mile 75. Set in 1955, the official synopsis of the film states the following: “The itinerary of a Junior Stargazer convention / Organized to bring together students and parents from across the country for fellowship and academic competition, Space Cadet is spectacularly interrupted by world-changing events.”
According to the trailer, the convention takes place during “Asteroid Day,” which commemorates the impact of a meteorite on the town’s current location on September 23, 3007 BC. Jason Schwartzman plays a widowed father who is stranded there with her four children, and begs her father-in-law (Tom Hanks) to come get them. While they wait, he develops a connection with a famous actress (Scarlett Johansson) and her son (Jake Ryan). But after a UFO and an alien apparently arrive on the scene, the United States government quarantines the entire city.
Production team and cast
Wes Anderson directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Roman Coppola (Moonrise Kingdom: A kingdom under the moon, The French Chronicle). Other recurring collaborators of the Texan auteur who contributed to the film were cinematographer Robert Yeoman, with whom he has worked nine times since looking for the crime (nineteen ninety six); Adam Stockhausen, his head production designer since Moonrise Kingdom: A kingdom under the moon (2012); as well as Oscar-winning composer Alexandre Desplat, who has scored all of his films since The fantastic Mr. Fox (2009).
As is traditional in Anderson productions, Asteroid City is littered with high-profile stars—and former collaborators—including Jason Schwartzman, Scarlett Johansson, Tilda Swinton, Edward Norton, Jeffrey Wright, Bryan Cranston, Adrien Brody, Liev Schreiber, Stephen Park, Rupert Friend, Willem Dafoe, Tony Revolori, Jake Ryan or Jeff Goldblum. New to the filmmaker’s unique cinematic universe are Tom Hanks, Margot Robbie, Hong Chau, Steve Carell, Maya Hawke, Matt Dillon and Sophia Lillis.
Other his fetish actors, Bill Murray, was also going to be part of the cast. However, the actor tested positive for COVID-19 before cameras rolled last year and was replaced by Carrell.
The seven-time Oscar-nominated filmmaker also produced this project with his regular partners Steven Rales and Jeremy Dawson.
When it premieres Asteroid City?
The new Wes Anderson film will have a limited release on June 16 in the United States, before expanding nationwide on June 23. At the moment, the tape does not have a release date for Mexico, but we will keep you updated.
