Producing coffee has an impact on the environment and has been quantified, a figure that gives a lot to think about.
We have always drank a lot of coffee and in recent years it seems that even more. Maybe it’s because of the accelerated rhythms we have today or because every time we sleep less, but its consumption is very widespread and it will also cost more to achieve it because of climate change.
The the impact of the coffee you drink on the environment it can now be calculated thanks to a new platform. This has been developed by Dr. Lucy Zaborowska from Cardiff and has been dubbed the Coffee Footprint Calculator, as reported in The confidential.
This calculator is very easy to use although it is in English. In it you can write down how many coffees you drink per day, week, month or year and of what kind: espresso, cappuccino, with milk or American. In the image you will see the different options available.
Below it is possible to indicate if the results of the consequences of the coffee taken are wanted for weeks, months or years. Let’s check it out.
For example, if you write down that you take a coffee with milk a day, the results per month are as follows: 4,909 mg of caffeine consumed, 4,347 liters of water used (the amount of water that 4 people drink in a year) and 7.47 kg CO₂ produced.
In addition, it also compares with practical examples how much CO₂ is that, the equivalent of charging 957 smartphones or driving about 29.8 km. As for the figures per year, you can imagine that they are quite exorbitant
Surely you will not stop drinking coffee by the results of this calculator, but it is always good to know what the consequences of our habits are.
