The mystery is over: we already know what Skull and Bones will be like! Ubisoft held a special event on July 7 dedicated to the pirate game in which it showed a cinematic trailer, a first descriptive gameplay and a second action-focused gameplay. I don’t blame you if you left wanting more.
If the list of the 11 games you can play until the release of Skull and Bones it falls short, now I show you seven movies and series that you can watch to kill the worm (or the leviathan) of emotion until its release, the November 8, 2022.
Pirates of the Caribbean (Saga)
It was obvious. Do not start this list with the saga of Pirates of the Caribbean It would be an insult to piracy. In this case, you have 5 movies to watch (for the moment):
The main trilogy (the first three) are absolutely great and perfect for a pirate marathon. The fourth movie doesn’t exist for many fans, myself included, and the fifth is entertaining. It could be said that the saga has not been better with deliveries.
Black Sails
Black Sails is surely the best pirate series that has ever been created. It aired from January 25, 2014 to April 2, 2017. It is a prequel to Treasure Island (Treasure Island) by Robert Louis Stevenson. It takes place twenty years before the events of the novel.
The series follows Captain James Flint during the golden age of pirates and features such mythical characters as Anne Bonny, Jack Rackham and Edward Teach, known as Blackbeard. The plot has politics, sea battles, betrayals, etc. In short: one of the best pirate settings ever made.
Master and Commander
There are classics that never die and Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World is one of them. Based on the novels by Patrick O’Brian, it follows the Captain Jack Aubrey (Russell Crowe), known as “Lucky Jack,” and his crew in a sea battle for survival.
the frigate HMS Surprisea 28-gun fifth-rate ship, is to follow the French warship acheron, a much larger 44-gun ship, to the shores of Brazil. The film shows this chase, which includes intense naval combat, in a story full of drama, raw and far from the fantasy of Pirates of the Caribbeanfor instance.
The Lost Kingdom of Pirates
If you are looking for something more… playful, this Netflix docu-series It tells you about the real origin of the pirates up to the exploits of the most famous pirates. It has 6 episodes of 40 mins (approx) each.
It follows a chronological line from the end of the war of Spanish succession, going through the figures of Benjamin Hornigold, Henry Jenning, Edward Thatch, Woodes Rogers and Sam «el Negro» Bellamy; to Nassau and the end of the pirates. Not only is it interesting, but it is accompanied by very cool images with real actors and recreations of naval battles.
The Island of Severed Heads
Despite its failure at the box office, The Island of Severed Heads has become a cult film in the cinema, especially for lovers of pirate movies. It premiered in 1995.
Its synopsis reads thus: Young Morgan Adams (Geena Davis) inherited from her father a piece of the map to a vast treasure, coveted by the sinister pirate Brown (Frank Langella). Morgan organizes an expedition to the Island of Severed Heads to try to find the two missing parts of the map and, of course, the treasure. Getting it won’t be easy.
The treasure Planet
Treasure Planet is a Disney space pirate animated film that has been grossly underrated for many years by audiences. It was nominated for an Oscar for best animated film in 2002. Over the years it has become a cult film and is currently considered one of the best Disney classics.
The story follows Jim Hawkin (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), a troubled young man and big fan of the Captain Flint stories, on a pirate adventure that takes him from his mother’s humble inn to Treasure Planet itself.
captain Phillips
For the last proposal we leave behind the galleons and frigates with cannons, the swords and the Caribbean to show you a story closer to our time, more real. Captain Phillips was released in 2013 and stars Tom Hanks.
The film is based on the actual kidnapping of the Maersk Alabama and in the book A captain’s duty (A Captain’s Duty), written by Stephan Talty and by Captain Richard Phillips, who was taken hostage by Somali pirates in 2009 while running the cargo ship MV Maersk Alabama across the Indian Ocean.
If these 7 proposals are not enough for you, here is a short list of other movies and series: Battleship (2012), The Island of the Corsairs (1952), Hook. Captain Hook (1991), The Hawk of the Sea (1940), the pirate woman (1951), Wind in the Sails (1965), Captain Kid (1945), the black swan (1942) and Pirates of the China Sea (1983).
