Ford Motor has recalled about 520,000 vehicles posing a fire hazard from the US market. All the vehicles that present this inconvenience are sports utility vehicles or better known as SUVs.
The review request came after receiving 50 reports of fires, along with 13 other fires caused by fuel leaks. Ford reported that, fortunately, no personal injuries or deaths related to the failure were reported.
In the review, it was detected that the fault is in the fuel injectors that apparently have cracks, through which fuels or their vapors leak, which, if they accumulate near hot areas, could set the vehicle on fire. Ford announced that cars from the years 2020, 2021, and 2022, including Ford Bronco Sport and Ford Escape SUV models with 1.5-liter 3-cylinder engines, were recalled in response to this finding.
The exit from the market of these vehicles already had another precedent at the beginning of 2022, when in the revisions it was detected that the casing of the oil separator was at risk of cracking, which could cause a fire if a leak occurred.
Ford will replace the cracked injectors on these vehicles, as well as update the units’ software to detect if the failure continues. Should the fault continue, the SUV’s engine power will automatically reduce to reduce risk and allow drivers to reach a place where they can request repair service.
Also, Ford announced that dealerships will install pipes to drain fuel away from hot surfaces.
Faced with these incidents, Ford urged drivers to inspect the vehicles and verify the condition of the units. In the meantime, he clarified that owners can continue to drive their vehicles safely until they schedule a service visit.
