Known as street art, urban or street art It is that type of artistic intervention that, instead of having to go to a museum to be able to contemplate, finds us by surprise in the middle of the city. It is accessible and democratic art and that is why we are so excited about initiatives such as the CALLE festival, which is now taking over the Madrid neighborhood of lavapiés as a canvas for 50 new artistic interventions.
Until May 29, the artists participating in this ninth edition baptized as AnimARTE will fill that the facades and shop windows of the Lavapiés premisestransforming them into a new stop of interest for residents and visitors of the central Madrid neighborhood.
Belin is the guest artist in charge of opening this installment of CALLE with his work Alhambra, an intervention currently in development until May 6 in the window of the Magarca furniture store (Headgear, 24). The Andalusian creator of international fame, and one of the referents of the graffiti scene since the 90s, will take over from our elders with the work Happiness in the Wanderer trade (Amparo, 42).
However, the vast majority of the 50 interventions that participate in the contest will take place from May 9 to 15. They will be carried out by numerous artists and in different formats: from painting on glass in the case of Mr. Tioda or Elisabeth Karin; to facades, like those of Ase Torralba and through photography, like that of Analogue Resistance.
However, one of the most interesting points of the festival is that the spectators also have an active role in the contest and we are the ones who, after having walked the streets of the neighborhood admiring their new works of art, we will have to jury duty.
Voting will take place from May 13 to 22 through the organization’s website and, later, prizes will be awarded to the three winners in the categories: ours, the jury’s and the Alhambra prize. In addition, guided tours will be available in which the interventions will be explained. They will take place from May 14 to 29, they will last one hour and you will have to apply for a place on the EnLavapiés website.
