This is how the Japanese brand presents Sony Xperia Pro-I, your new mobile phone that, as we anticipated yesterday, has been designed with an eye toward photographers and videographers. Thus, it is confirmed that it will come with the 1 “stacked Exmor RS sensor featuring the suitably adapted Sony RX100 VII, dedicated Bionz X co-processor and a Zeiss-signed dual aperture ƒ2.0 or ƒ4.0 diaphragm prime lens.
As we advance, It is not the first mobile with a sensor of this gigantic size (for a device of this type), since more than six years ago we already had the Panasonic Lumix CM1 (which was more of a hybrid of camera and mobile than a smartphone) and in May of this year Sharp went ahead with the Aquos R6 , which was later “replicated” by Leica with its Leitz Phone 1.
However, the similarities in terms of resolution (20 MP) and the fact that it was rumored at the time that the Sharp’s sensor could be manufactured by Sony, suggests that both captors could be the same. Of course, while the Aquos R6 bets everything on a single camera, the new Sony arrives, as you can see above, with a triple camera with an ultra-wide lens of 16 mm (equiv) ƒ2.2, a main of 24 mm (equiv) ƒ2.0 / 4.0 and a TV of 50 mm (equiv) ƒ2.4 all of them associated with 12 MP sensors, plus another depth sensor iTOF 3D.
But where is the 20 megapixel sensor then? Well, as told in DPReview, the new Sony Xperia Pro-I comes with a “catch”: only the central part of the sensor is used (which remains in the aforementioned 12 MP) since the image circle that the lens forms does not cover the entire area of the sensor. Even so, the fact of having large pixels (2.4 µm) augurs a greater ability for low-light photography.
On the other hand, that variable diaphragm we were talking about has remained in a double aperture diaphragm; that is to say that it has two positions, ƒ2.0 or ƒ4.0. Therefore, it would not be a diaphragm for the use of cameras, but at least it will allow a little more versatility to play with depth of field or in situations of great luminosity.
Advanced AF and 4K 120p video
But beyond the data that we already advance, the new smartphone has been promising autofocus capabilities similar to those of the brand’s cameras thanks to the incorporation of similar components such as the BIONZ X processor. Specifically, the Sony Xperia Pro-I promises Phase detection AF with 315 points that cover 90% of the frame and with focus to eye (for humans and animals) and real time tracking, available in both photo and video.
In fact, we already anticipated that the new mobile comes very prepared for the recording of moving images and is presented as the First smartphone on the market capable of recording 4K video at 120 fps. In addition, it also promises crystal-clear audio recording and high-quality audio features including Dolby Atmos, 360 Reality Audio, a minijack connector and stereo speakers Full-stage. In addition, a new function called Videography Pro announcing the combination of “creative flexibility with ease of use“.
The launch of the accessory that we are talking about designed for professional self-recording, called Vlog Monitor. Also that the software for taking photos and videos will be very similar to Sony Alpha cameras, with an application that includes manual mode shooting with dials, and that there will be options for later editing of the images.
Price and availability
The Sony Xperia Pro-I will be available early december by 1,799 euros in its only version. Unfortunately, it will initially only be sold in the UK, France, Germany, the Netherlands and some Nordic countries, but the brand plans to extend the launch to other European regions.
