At the beginning of this month of July, the preparations for the World Paella Day Cup 2021 began in Valencia, a day that, coinciding with the International Paella Day, on September 20, seeks to celebrate the recognition of the most universal dish of Valencian gastronomy , in addition to finding and recognizing the best chef in the world cooking paella.
A contest that is already beginning its preliminary phase with the participation of thirty-six international chefs from Russia, China, South Korea, America — United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Uruguay, Panama, Mexico, Costa Rica, Ecuador and Argentina— and Europe —Spain, France, Czech Republic, Italy, Ireland and Belgium— who presented their candidacies to participate in this second edition of the World Paella Day CUP.
The eight participating Spanish chefs and cooks are:
- David Domingo, from Teruel, is the current Valencian paella world champion after winning the last edition of the Sueca Valencian International Paella Competition.
- Héctor Medina Fernández, a foodie and a passionate about rice dishes, who takes this paella challenge.
- Ibán Soriano, a cook with a great journey between stoves. José Zafra, amateur researcher of the history of paella since its origins.
- Josetxo Pajares, who has participated in previous competitions, finishing third in the Alicante International Competition, Ciudad del Arroz 2019.
- Marcos Gómez, a young chef who has multiple restaurants in the city of Valencia, two of them with their star dish, the Valencian paella.
- Noelia Pascual is also known as the chef del fuego and belongs to the 4th generation of a matriarchal business.
- Susi Bernat, Catalan cook whose restaurant has been distinguished by Wikipaella in Catalonia.
Going for the best paella
This year, and always depending on the sanitary conditions, the eight finalists that result from this preliminary phase will be invited to go to Valencia to compete on September 20 live in person.
The winner will receive as a prize the trophy, made by a fallas artist, which will accredit him as the winner of the II Edition of the World Paella Cup. In addition, the participants will receive a personalized jacket and a certificate of their status as a finalist.
