iOS 16 has already been presented, finally. Apple’s new operating system offers interesting news for the iPhone, and many of them were discussed by the company during WWDC 2022. But, Did you know there were some that they didn’t mention? It’s common for many features to become known when users start beta testing, and iOS 16 was no exception.
For this, today we collect 22 new features of iOS 16 that Apple did not mention in the keynote. Yes, we have already talked about the revamped lock screen of iOS 16, and also about its improvements to applications such as Camera, the integration of the Casa app with the Matter standard and the improved support for devices such as Chromecast with AirPlay. But today that is not the important thing, today we come to tell you about those that were forgotten among the great news.
The best of all is that these new features are not as small as they seem. In fact, some of them are extremely useful, and we are sure that they will help improve the productivity of iPhone users who decide to make the move to iOS 16. If you want to give the beta a try, we have already explained how to install it on your device.
The news of iOS 16 that Apple did not mention
1. Improvements in notifications
- Focus mode. In iOS 16, you’ll be able to activate your favorite focus mode based on your location, a proposed schedule, or when you open a specific app. Thus, entering a mode of greater concentration can become an easier habit. Additionally, you can now segregate your notifications into Allowed and Disallowed lists.
- Messages. The Messages app will now have a dedicated section for unread messages. Also, iMessage receives a function to undo and edit sent content.
- Notification customization. With iOS 16 you can customize the way notifications are displayed on your lock screen. They are known as List, Stack and Count.
- web notifications. Apple will allow websites to send notifications Push to your iPhone. But don’t worry, if you don’t want to be disturbed, you will always have the possibility to deactivate this function.
2. Security and privacy improvements
- Face ID improvements. When you update to iOS 16, you will be able to unlock your iPhone with Face ID in landscape mode. Until now, we could only do this if we held the phone vertically, but Apple has finally improved this feature. However, some rumors say that this feature could only be available from iPhone 13 onwards.
- security updates. With iOS 16 security updates will be automatically downloaded to your iPhone. With the “Rapid Security Response” function, Apple will be able to release security patches for iOS without the need to update the entire system each time.
- WiFi password. Now you can see the passwords of your saved networks, and you can also copy them to share with your guests.
- Protect your hidden and deleted photos. Starting with iOS 16, you’ll need to unlock the “Hidden” and “Deleted” folders using Face ID or Touch ID. Until then, no credentials were needed to access these folders, leaving them vulnerable to anyone with access to your iPhone.
- Clipboard access. Every time you copy from one app to another, iOS 16 will ask you if you want to give that app access to the system clipboard. Thus, you can control exactly which apps can use this feature.
- password management. The new version promises to offer better management of our keys. In iOS 16, you’ll be able to choose whether to use iCloud Keychain or Google Authenticator for verification codes you receive on your iPhone.
- Developer Mode. With iOS 16, Apple will integrate a Developer Mode to the operating system. Apparently, we will have to have it active when we want to test an app installed through TestFlight.
3. Accessibility Improvements
- live subtitles on FaceTime. With the live subtitles feature, Apple aims to improve the usability of the iPhone for people living with hearing impairments.
- Hang more easily. Apple now lets you use your iPhone’s lock button to hang up calls as well. This function can be activated from the Accessibility section.
4. Improvements in the multimedia section
- Copy photo edits. One of the most anticipated functions for years by image editors. With this new feature you will be able to take the editing of an image, and paste it into the rest of the collection. This way you can create your own “templates” with the same parameters.
- Keep up with your favorite artists. Apple Music is also updated, and now you can add the artists you listen to the most to a list of favorites. Thus, you can receive notifications every time new content is released on the platform.
- Find your playlist. With iOS 16 you’ll be able to search for your favorite playlists by their name, artist, album, release date, and order of songs added.
- Joy-Con Controller Compatibility. That’s how it is. If you own a Nintendo Switch, you can now connect the Joy-Cons to your iPhone thanks to this iOS 16 feature.
- Various API improvements. With the new APIs of iOS 16, devices such as Chromecast, Amazon Echo or Sonos receive “almost” native support in the system. Also, other innovations in the APIs will allow developers to create maps of rooms in Augmented Reality, including the objects it contains. On the other hand, the API Live Activities allows developers to include sports game scorecards on the iPhone lock screen.
5. New utilities
- LiveText on the Web. With the new Live Text update in iOS 16, you can directly translate images from websites.
- Improvements in the Notes app. You can now do real-time conversions using the Notes app in iOS 16. For example, type 1,000 grams and then tap Clever. Then tap on the number again and the system will display other conversion units. It works with currencies, weights, liquid volume and much more.
- Fast notes. The “Share” menu now includes the Quick Notes option. With it, you can write whatever you want on an article or image without the need to pass content between applications.
- NIF compatibility in more applications. Apple has opened up its Nearby Interaction Framework system — the one used by devices like AirTags and the Find app — to all developers. Thus, anyone will be able to program their apps in iOS 16 to give directions that will be used to find objects by showing an arrow on the screen.
