A few weeks ago, TSMC’s plans for the next few years began to be discussed. This company is responsible for the manufacture of the chips inside Apple productsTherefore, any change can be critical. Especially, because that implies developments in the development of these, which usually lead to significant improvements.
This time, it is a breakthrough in the chip manufacturing process, which would become 3nm next year. This has been indicated since DigiTimes, confirming past reports that already spoke of reaching 2nm in 2024, and indicating that Apple would be its main customer. These new chips would go into production in the second half of 2022.
At that point, the new devices that the company launches would have the first Apple Silicon chips manufactured in 3nm. Such a jump usually leads to notable improvements in performance as well as energy efficiency. Thanks to that, futures A16 or M3 would continue to increase their leadership in the face of competition in an increasingly hostile market.
For now, in the shorter term, it is expected that the next A15 Bionic, which would arrive with the iPhone 13, remain manufactured in 5nm, albeit with an improved process. The Macs, for their part, would make the jump to 4nm later. For this, Apple would have monopolized all the production of TSMC, thus ensuring the next steps of its line of computers.
Thus, and leaving aside the benefits that 3nm chips will bring us in 2022, in a few weeks we will know the immediate future of Apple Silicon. It is expected that iPhone 13 makes its debut in September with the new chip. And even if it’s not a huge leap, we are confident that the A15 Bionic will continue to reach new heights of performance.
